Use wet newspaper strips as carpenters tape

If you want to keep these areas clean, one trick you can do is to apply some Vaseline to the hardware before you start painting. Take a small brush and paint petroleum jelly over hinges, screws, and bolts to ensure that paint doesn’t go on these areas.
