Why Every Man Needs A Shed In His Backyard

If you’re like most homeowners, you probably have too much stuff and not enough storage space. If there’s a man around the house, tools and yard equipment can take up your entire garage. Outdoor sheds and garages can provide extra space for all those things you need to store.

You’ll find a wide range of designs, sizes and materials for outdoor storage buildings. They’re available in prefabricated models that can be delivered and installed in your yard, as well as DIY models that are rather simple to build. The outdoor shed and garage has become a popular home feature that serves a functional void for homeowners who don’t have adequate storage space.

Designs

You can find backyard sheds and garages in a variety of designs to complement your home. They’re available in contemporary styles with flat roofs and glass doors; farmhouse styles with high-pitched roofs and barnyard doors; quaint cottage styles with French doors and window boxes; and simple metal designs.

Sizes

An outdoor shed or garage comes in a range of sizes from 3 feet x 6 feet up to 16 feet x 20 feet. Available sizes vary by manufacturer, but DIY models are usually smaller than prefabricated models. When choosing a size, most people base their decision on cost and storage space, but you should also consider the size of your backyard and how you plan to use the space.

Size of Your Yard

A smaller back yard needs a smaller shed or garage. When selecting a size, plan your shed foundation at least three feet away from fencing, trees and outdoor structures, and make sure you have plenty of room to open the doors. Don’t locate your shed directly under trees or power lines.

Use of The Space

The most common items stored in an outdoor shed or garage are tools, lawn mowers, lawn equipment and sports equipment. Once you determine your use for the space, measure the items that will go inside to help you determine the right size. Keep in mind that you will probably add more items over time and buy a size that gives you extra room for growth.

Materials

Outdoor sheds and garages are available in wood, resin and metal. The material you choose may be influenced by price and climate conditions in your area.

Wood – A wooden shed can be stained or painted to complement your house, but it will require periodic touch-ups. Wooden shed kits are more expensive than resin or metal, and they must be protected from water, harsh weather conditions and insects that can cause damage to the wood.

Resin – A resin shed is constructed from high-quality plastic materials that are durable, strong and lightweight. Lifetime products also use steel supports and double-wall panel construction. Resin is maintenance-free, stain-resistant, and won’t fade, crack or rust over time.

Metal – Although a metal shed or garage is the least expensive option, it isn’t as strong as wood or resin, and it’s susceptible to outdoor damage like dents, scratches and rust. In areas with heavy storms and winds, a metal shed needs to be secured with an anchoring kit.
