What type of Gift Givers are You?

Thinking of gift ideas, and more importantly gift giving is something that we all like to take part in during many special occasions – whether it is Birthdays, Christmas, Weddings or other important events.

The act of purchasing a gift can give us an emotional boost and fill us with a sense of fulfilment that we are undertaking what could be considered as a “good deed”. Likewise, receiving a gift will give us a great sense of appreciation and a feeling of being loved by the one who has passed on the respective present.

So, are there different types of gift givers? Online auction web site eBay conducted a study that looked into the psychology of gifting. The research concluded that there are four different types of gift givers. This article will highlight and describe each of the types – giving you an understanding under which category you may fall!

Emotional Gift Givers

The study shows that 40 per cent of shoppers are emotional givers. These types of people seek out gifts that are unique and distinctive, giving a great deal of thought into the requirements of individual recipients. Emotional givers want to portray how much they know about the recipient by purchasing a gift that is related to the interests of the receiver. Gifts are usually wrapped by the givers personally and delivered with a hand written note or card.

Practical Gift Givers

Around 20 per cent of those in the study were found to be practical givers. These are the people who prefer to present gifts as cash, cheques or in-store vouchers. They are practical thinkers so believe that giving people the choice to decide upon their own gift is the way forward. This way, they cannot feel guilt for purchasing a gift that might not be appreciated by the recipient.

Convenience Gift Givers

The research concluded that 16 per cent of the shoppers were to be categorised as convenience givers. This type of shopper prefers to be time efficient in their gift giving by using just one store to purchase all of their gifts from.

Convenience givers are people who see gift purchasing and giving as a chore rather than a pleasant and heart-warming experience.

Last-minute Gift Givers

The rest of the people that were put into consideration during this study have been labelled as last-minute givers. As the name suggests, these people leave gift purchasing to the latest possible time and often prioritise other tasks. These people tend not to plan out their gift giving and may purchase on pure impulse.
