Valentines Day Craft Gifts

Valentine’s Day is a great time to show people you love, that you’re thinking about them and nothing makes that message clearer than a homemade gift. Here are some step by step instructions to make a simple picture frame mouse pad.

Homemade Mousepad Picture Frame

This is a really simple gift that can be made with any type of patterned or craft fabrics.

Stuff Required:

  • At least 1/3 yard of a printed fabric
  • Canvas fabric
  • Rick rack or border material
  • Enough cardboard to make two 9 ½ inch squares
  • Glue
  • Plastic page protector

Instructions:

1. Cut the cardboard into two 9 1/2 inch squares.

2. Cut the center out of one of the pieces of cardboard to leave a 1/2 inch border space.

3. Cut an 11 1/2 inch square from the printed fabric and the canvas fabric.

4. Put the crafting glue on one side of the frame piece that has the center cut out. Center the frame in the middle of the printed piece of fabric. Smooth out wrinkles and cut an “X” in the middle of the fabric from one corner to the other.

5. Fold the pieces of the “X” on to the back of the frame. Glue the plastic page protector onto the back side of the frame.

6. Put some glue around the outer edge of the frame and fold the fabric on to the back side, smoothing into place.

7. Cover the other piece of cardboard in the canvas fabric, folding the extra fabric over the edges and gluing into place.

8. Center the picture you want to use in the plastic covered space on the first cardboard piece you covered. Either glue the picture in place by carefully lifting the edges or use  fasteners on the edges of the picture if you want to be able to change it out.

9. Glue or use fasteners to secure the front and the back pieces together.

10. Glue your rick rack, or border material, around the edge of the picture to frame it off.

11. When you’re giving this as a gift it is best if you can find a picture of this loved one and yourself, or your child together. But it can also feature an inspirational quote or picture.

Knick-knack holder

You can also make a matching pencil or knick-knack holder to go with the mouse pad.

Stuff Required:

  • Canvas fabric
  • Felt fabrics
  • Basic sewing supplies

Instructions:

1.  Cut a 6 ½ inch by 15 ½ inch strip from each fabric to make the side panel.

2. Cut a 5 inch circle to make the bottom.

3. Put your strips of fabric together with the print on the top and the felt on the bottom. Stitch across the top (the long side) and turn the print fabric over so it is facing the correct way (with the print on the outside).  Put the ends of your strip of fabric together and stitch together down the short side to make a circle shaped strip.

4. Take the circles of fabric and put them together with the print on the top and felt on the bottom. Stitch together to make one circle piece.

5. Place your side part and circles together with the pattern side facing outwards. Double stitch around the perimeter, clipping as needed to make it easier to keep the fabric together.
