Boffer Sword (Foam Weapon) – DIY Ideas

Being a mother of two kids, I’m very conscious about their choice of play, specially if they choose to play with weapons of their choice i.e. a sword or gun. Obviously they are not handling with real swords or guns even then they can hurt each other with plastic toys. I googled “safety measures for kids” and found the Foam Weapon DIY idea. It was then, I realized the ability of foam as a tricky replacement of any unsafe weapon and crafted some toys for my kids including Boffer Sword.

Foam objects are flexible, strong, light weighted and moreover safest of any other material. Foam suppliers normally have a variety of foams having different qualities, colors, shapes and thickness. You can easily choose any of them as per your requirement. Let us proceed to the stuff required and method of making a boffer sword for your kids.

Stuff Required:

  • Round Foam of a Suitable Size
  • Old Plastic Sword
  • Hand Saw
  • Hot Glue
  • Duct Tape

Instructions:

1. Use the handsaw to cut the foam of required length.

2. Use the handsaw to cut the blade of old plastic sword, leaving the 2 to 3 inches with hilt.

3. Apply the hot glue on the remaining excessive portion on hilt and let it cool for 15 to 20 seconds. Now insert the excessive portion with hilt into the foam.

Precaution: If you will apply the hot glue on foam then the foam will melt and definitely you would not like to see it happening, so let the glue a little cool before contacting with foam.

4. Apply the duct tape on the joint and use some decoration on this jointing to give it an attractive look.

Precaution: Don’t apply the duct tape on full foam weapon as it would harden the foam and reduce it’s flexibility.
