Four Distinctive Styles for Your Kitchen

Traditionally, the kitchen is the heart of the home. Large or small, with all mod cons or only a double-burner hot plate and low-rise fridge – your kitchen can still very much live up the title. So if you’re given the opportunity to overhaul yours, then you might want to design it with a specific theme or style in mind. Read on for five possibilities for you to think about when doing up your kitchen.

Country

A traditional country-style kitchen has long been a popular choice, conjuring up a rustic feel and a warming simplicity. Depending on your home’s age and the layout or size of the kitchen, you should incorporate the original features into the design, such as a fireplace if you have one.

When it comes to work surfaces and cabinets, a rustic pine finish is the look you’re after. Attractively farmhouse-style though they may be, wooden floors are impractical for kitchens, in the main. They stain easily and continual spillages can cause them to splinter, wither and split. Natural stone floor tiles or flagstones are a much better idea – some even come with a pre-weathered look.

Vintage

Creating a vintage look and feel in your kitchen doesn’t mean you’ll have to include yesterday’s technology in your plans (unless you wish to – after all, you can still buy fully-functioning 1950s fridges and Magimix blenders on eBay). It’s all about the aesthetic.

For your floors and walls, opt for an ice-cream pink or pistachio-green colour scheme, or alternatively, cherry-red and white. Go for cream appliances and storage where possible, and perhaps include some pastel-coloured storage jars. Some floral touches – such as tea towels or tablecloths, can also be a nice way to add a vintage feel to a kitchen. A centre island with some stools, topped with leather seats, makes for a great finishing touch.

Contemporary

Sleek and elegant, cool and innovative, the options are endless when it comes to ideas for contemporary fitted kitchens. High-gloss units are the most popular choice when it comes to this style. Think integrated, chrome ovens, microwaves and dishwashers. Curved breakfast bars and circular centre islands can also help to achieve a fresh, modern look. Unorthodox lighting, filter-water taps and rubbish-disposal units are other features that work brilliantly contemporary kitchen.

American

White block tiling, double ovens, integrated microwaves and huge fridge-freezers with ice-dispensers, are just some staples of the great American-style kitchen. When it comes to the cabinet and worktops, you can opt for Early American mahogany finish, or sleek and luxurious, with a gloss finish.

Essentially, you’ll be seeking to create a space that’s for more than just cooking, and the ambience you bring to the room will all be decided by the style you choose.
