How to Dress for Summer Whilst Also Keeping Warm!

We are all feeling frustrated at how interchangeable the weather has been over the past few months. One day it’s a glorious sunny morning and you think ‘Hurray, summer is here!’ but the next, winter feels like it’s made a comeback. Just when you thought you could put away your winter-weight knits and brown leather boots, the cold wind comes roaring in from the east like a harbinger of doom, and the weather forecasters are talking about sleet.

So, how should we dress in unsettled times like these? There are, as far as I’m concerned, two answers to that. Firstly, remember that layers are your friend. Secondly, find the right sort of footwear to cover any weather eventuality.

Let’s look at layers first or, as it’s known on the continent, Der Zwiebel-Look (Zweibel is German for onion). Layering basically means starting and ending the day, when it is chilly, wearing several layers. During the warmer, middle part of the day you can then discard said layers with gleeful abandon. Just don’t discard every layer!

Layering is all well and good for ‘normal’ days when you can get away with throwing on a baggy cardie (and maybe even a scarf?) for mooching around at home or in the office if the boss is out. However, it can be a pain trying to achieve a well-dressed look while you’re encased in your multi-skinned onion of layers of garments: ‘Hello Mr. Client, I am an onion. Peel me!’ It is possible, though.

Remember that the secret behind layering is to keep it looking deliberate as well as stylish and effective. You do this by arranging your clothes so that the bottom layer, the one closest to your skin, is also the one that is the closest fitting. Your outer layers should become progressively looser. These layers should be the heaviest in weight, so for instance wear a chunky knit or a denim jacket over a lighter cotton camisole.

Next we come to footwear, my onion friends. Start off by finding a good pair of flat, elegant shoes. Something like ballet pumps, which always look good and can be worn with almost anything. Secondly, keep out those knee-high leather boots from your winter wardrobe. Remember that real leather boots are good for all seasons. They keep you warm in the winter, but in the summer the leather lets your skin breathe. Boots may not be as well ventilated as sandals, but when worn with lightweight socks, they are cool enough whilst offering your feet protection from any inclement weather. Provided you treat them with a sealant they will be extremely waterproof.

So, to ready yourself for any eventuality this summer, remember to dress warmly in multi-layers. Also remember to have a good pair of ballet pumps and a pair of real leather boots to hand for every occasion. Sorted!
